• An Ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eyes. He/she can perform any kind of surgical or medical eye treatment.
  • An Optometrist is a doctor who performs eye examinations, fits contact lenses, may fit glasses and perform some medical treatment.
  • An Optician designs and fits, and may fabricate, eyeglasses. Some Opticians also fit contact lenses. The State of Maryland does not regulate Opticians, and while there are many fine Opticians who have voluntarily become educated and qualified, there are also many who have little knowledge or experience.

Annapolis Opticians owner Douglas J. Corby has over 40 years experience as an Optician. He was trained in England through an apprenticeship system that combined five years of on the job training with classroom study. He also trained with Keeler’s low vision clinic in London, and worked for several years as a low vision specialist. He is a Fellow of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, an Honored Fellow of the Opticians Association of America, and American Board of Opticianry Certified. He is also a past President of the Opticians Association of Maryland.
